Employment
The Chicago Ridge Police Department hires full-time officers in two separate ways.
Public Hiring
The Police and Fire Commission gives out applications for possible future employment. Applicants are required to have at least 60 semester hours of college education. Candidates must pass a written physical and oral interview to be placed on an eligibility list. This list is valid for two years. Additional testing is required for those candidates selected.
Internal Hiring
The Police Department also hires officers laterally. Applications are given to qualified candidates for these positions. Applicants must currently be working as full-time police officers in another jurisdiction for as least 12 consecutive months. These candidates will also undergo a series of examinations prior to being selected. These applications are also kept for two years.
Part-Time Police Officer
Chicago Ridge Police Department is now accepting applications for part-time police officer. The applicant must be 21 years of age and above and will undergo an extensive background check and interview process.
Part-time officers shall be assigned to duties that they have been trained to perform, such as parks patrol, traffic control, safety coverage at village events and supplement the Patrol Division as required. Part-time Officers are responsible for the processing, observations, and transportation of prisoners that are in custody. This position requires clerical skills, to include computer skills and two-way radio communication skills. The person must have the ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment. Communications in the position are normally non-emergency, but the employee must be able to handle unforeseeable situations that may be considered to be emergencies.
Part-time Officers undergo, up to 100-hours of training within the department and will be required to attend a 400-hr police training academy for part-time police officers with 18 months after appointment. The training period is considered an observation period for possible employment and receives no compensation.
Pay: $12 per hour
Hours of work: any period in a day, on any day of the week.
Average number of hours per week: under 30 hours
Part-time police officers receive no uniform allowance.
Completed application must be returned to the office of the Chief of Police along with a copy of a government issued, photo identification card (i.e. drivers license).
Part-Time Desk Officer
Part-time Desk Officer: A person appointed by the Village through the Chief of Police as a part-time employee, who has met the training requirements for the position of the assignment. This employee is required to perform clerical duties; the person must have the ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment. communications in the position are normally non-emergency, but the employee must be able to handle unforeseeable situations that may be considered to be emergencies.
Training of Part-time Desk Officers
Part-time Desk Officers undergo, up to 100-hours of training within the department. This period is considered an observation period for possible employment and receives no compensation.
Authorized Uniform/Equipment
The purchase of authorized uniforms and equipment for part-time police desk officers shall be the responsibility of the employee. Part-time police disk officers shall be the responsibility of the employee. Part-time desk officers are required to wear a uniform similar to a part-time officer.
Pay: $10 per hour
After one year: $11 per hour
Hour of work: any period in a day, on any day of the week.
Average number of hours per week: under 30 hours
School Crossing Guard
Description: To provide safe crossings for school children at designated intersections to avoid conflict with vehicular traffic. The work schedule is designated by the school calendar for each school. Time periods are designated by the location and school hours; it requires two- 35 minute periods; once in the morning hours and once in the afternoon hours.
Pay: $25 per school day.
One set of Uniforms are provided.
Must be a resident of the Village of Chicago Ridge.
Must pass screening and background verification.
Must be 21 years of age and above.
Positions open starting in August 2014:
1 designated school crossing guard for a full school year.
1 alternate school crossing guard to work as needed in a replacement capacity.
