Resident
Information
There are many department policies and
procedures that effect our residents. This page will discuss
some of them.
Accidents
If you are involved in a motor vehicle accident, it
is highly recommended that you contact the police department
immediately. To avoid future problems, it is best that an
officer respond to the scene to take a vehicle crash report.
In some cases, the police may request for those involved in
minor property damage only accidents to come to the station.
All parties involved in an accident must be present, at the
same time, within 48-hours of an accident to have a report
written. The only exception is in the case of a hit and run
accident.
Domestic
Violence Incidents
The Chicago Ridge Police Department is widely known
for their stand against Domestic Violence. Anytime the police
are called to the scene of a domestic incident, a report will
be written. If there are signs of a domestic battery, an
arrest will be made regardless of either parties’ wishes. We
realize every family deals with the tensions and pressures of
marriage and child rearing and we are there to help in a
discrete manner. However, violence is never an acceptable
method of dealing with these matters.
If an Order of Protection and/or warrant is
being sought, the victim will be advised to report to the
police station the following morning (except on Sunday) and an
officer will accompany them to the courthouse with the
appropriate paperwork.
The department has officers assigned to
follow-up on domestic violence cases. If you have any
questions regarding these matters, feel free to contact the
police department on either our non-emergency number (708)
425-7831 or our Domestic Violence Line (708) 425-5437.
Hiring
The Chicago Ridge Police Department hires full-time
officers two separate ways. The Police and Fire Commission
gives out applications for possible future employment.
Applicants are required to have at least 60 semester
hours of college education. Candidates must pass a written
physical and oral interview to be placed on an eligibility
list. This list is valid for two years. Additional testing
is required for those candidates selected.
The police department also hires officers
laterally. Applications are given to qualified candidates for
these positions. Applicants must currently be working as
full-time police officers in another jurisdiction for as least 12 consecutive months. These candidates will also
undergo a series of examinations prior to being selected.
These applications are also kept for two years.
Towing
of Vehicles
The Chicago Ridge Police Department does not tow
vehicles from private property unless a special circumstance
arises. Businesses, condo associations and apartment building
owners should contract with a towing service to have any
illegally parked/abandoned autos removed. Signs should be
clearly posted prior to this action taking place.
Vacation
Watches
Anyone requesting additional patrol while they are
on vacation, may contact the non-emergency at the police
department at least one week in advance. Although we cannot
guarantee additional security for your home, we can attempt to
have the beat car check the premises more frequently. This
will depend on manpower and caseload.
Recognition/Complaints
Against Police Personnel
If a citizen has a complaint or wishes to recognize
an officer, we ask that you speak to that officer’s
immediate supervisor. If you do not feel satisfied with the
outcome, you should contact the Deputy Chief of Police during
business hours on the non-emergency line (708) 425-7831.
