K-9 Unit
The Chicago Ridge Police Department is excited
about the edition of its first K-9 Unit. In September 2000,
"Houser", a 17-month old German Shepherd, hit
the streets. Houser was born and initially trained in Germany.
Since coming to this country, Houser spent an additional
12-weeks training at the Cook County Sheriff Training Center with Patrol
Officer John McQuinn. Houser specializes in finding narcotics
as well as missing persons and building searches. You may also
see Houser at the Chicago Ridge Fest as well as demonstrations
in our area schools and parks.
Officer McQuinn and his partner patrol in a
police vehicle with additional markings indicating there is a
dog inside and caution should be used when approaching the
vehicle. Although Houser loves being around kids, anyone wishing
to see him up close must get permission from his handler
(Officer McQuinn) first.
In the first few months Officer McQuinn and
Houser have been on the street, they have been successful in
locating thousands of dollars worth of narcotics and have
confiscated several thousands dollars which was used in drug
possession/dealing. We look forward to the continued success
of the K-9 unit and reporting it to you on this web page.
